Peewee Select - Heritage Invitational Tournament
Submitted By Erin Manboarde on Wednesday, February 6, 2019
This past weekend (Jan 31st - Feb 3rd) the Peewee Select Jr. Bulls traveled west down the 401 to take part in the Oshawa Church Hockey League's Forty-Fourth Heritage Invitational Hockey Tournament.
This tournament was attended by 100 teams with age groups ranging from Novice to Midget. This is the largest Select Hockey Tournament in Ontario with over 2000 players and team personnel taking part.
The Major Peewee division was full to capacity with 16 clubs.

The Bulls opened up the tournament with a 4-1 victory over the East York Bulldogs.  This was a real good test for the Bulls.  Their Coaches had them prepared, they scored just over a minute in and with some strong defensive play and great goaltending never looked back.
Bulls got goals from Cameron Vella (2), Ryder Brown and Locklin Stewart with assists from Travis Phillips, Stewart, Andrew Campbell and Nicholas Martin.Goaltender Malcolm Storey was the Bulls best penalty killer and helped the Bulls kill off five straight penalties including a lengthy 5 on 3 and was awarded Player of the Game rightfully so.
When the Bulls first saw the schedule, no one was looking forward to a 7:15AM start on Saturday morning, at least that’s what we thought.  The Peewee Selects had us all fooled and played a near flawless game beating the Rosedale Devils 8-0.
Belleville’s attack was lead by Player of the Game and Team Captain Brown and his five points (3G-2A), also lighting the lamp three times was Vella.  Other goal scorers were Phillips and Stewart. Assists went to Noah Swart (3), Phillips (2), Andrew Benson and Sam Goulden.  Storey was in net for the win.
Lots of times in games like this, strong defensive work gets forgotten,   Forward Everett Rowe and D-Man Liam Monaghan both played a strong shut down game and played a huge part in shutting the Devils down.
Game 3 was a must win, with 16 teams and only the top 4 moving on to Championship Sunday, the Bulls had to go 3-0 in Pool play to advance.
The Bulls jumped out to 1-0 lead off the stick of Martin after a nice give and go with Vella.  The North Durham Warriors came to win and scored goals in the last minute of the 2nd period and the first minute of the 3rd to lead 2-1.
The Warriors were just that, Warriors and they fought off the Bulls and continued to apply pressure.  The Bulls wanted it and with 1:14 left on the clock tied the game on a great solo effort from Stewart.
The Bulls kept the puck deep in the North Durham zone when Brown scored with 26 seconds left on a nice feed from Luke McLennan. Swart added the insurance marker with Brown picking up the apple and was awarded The Player of the Game.
No one complained about the 7:15AM start on Sunday, a berth in the Gold Medal final was on the line.  Life on the road caught up to Belleville and they were handled easily by the Carlton Place Kings losing 7-1.  McLennan was one of the lone bright spots for the Bulls in this game and took home Player of the Game honours.
Evan Hebert of the Kings deserves to be mentioned here.  He was a real pleasure to watch and controlled the game scoring 5 times.  Every time he was on the ice he was involved in pushing the play.  Vella scored the Bulls lone marker.
Their day wasn’t done, after regrouping at various restaurants and coffee shops, the Bulls returned to the Delpark Homes Centre to play in the Silver Medal Final vs the host Oshawa Hawks.

The Bulls coaches made some line-up adjustments before this game knowing the Bulls would have to play a tight defensive game vs the high flying Hawks.

The players responded.  The paring of Kayleb Myers and Kadan Gelsthorpe was stellar.  Oshawa took a 1-0 lead on a lucky bounce of the back boards early in the game, after that both teams buckled down in a defensive until Oshawa took a 2-0 mid way through the 2nd.  Belleville didn’t stop and showed boat loads of character never stopping and really giving the Hawks fits in their own end.  The Bulls were rewarded with a goal late in the 3rd but thanks to some great goaltending that was as close as they could get. Sam Goulden took home Belleville Player of the Game Award.

After the game all three coaches mentioned how proud they were of their group. “Silver Finalists at this tournament is something this group should be really proud of, we’re proud of them and they showed up and represented BMHA at a Gold standard both on and off the ice”.
