Raiders Take Game One Despite Gritty Effort in Ajax
The playoffs opened with intensity as the Bulls hit the road for Game One in Ajax against the Ajax-Pickering Raiders. While the final score didn't swing their way, the effort and offensive push made it clear this series is far from one-sided.
First Period
The Raiders struck first, capitalizing late in the opening period with a goal at the 3:30 mark. They followed it up with another with just 1:44 remaining, converting on the power play to take early control.
But the response came fast. Noah turned up the pressure on the forecheck, forcing a turnover that led to a breakaway finish and a huge momentum boost. Not long after, Gibson set up Wyatt with a clean feed to even things up.
After one period, it was tied at 2-2.
Second Period
The Raiders regained the lead midway through the second, scoring with 11:29 left. They added another from the blue line at 3:45 remaining in the period - a seeing-eye shot through traffic that made it a two-goal game heading into the third.
Third Period
The third started with a strong offensive push, as chances came early and often. The breakthrough came while shorthanded when Vincent setup Wyatt for a big goal to close the gap.
However, the Raiders answered again with just over nine minutes to play on a strange sequence where the whistle was delayed, resulting in a fluky goal that extended their lead. Their goaltender then slammed the door shut, making a highlight-reel save late to preserve the 5-3 edge.
Final Thoughts
Despite the loss, the offensive pressure and work ethic stood out. Breakaways, shorthanded scoring, and sustained zone time showed this group can generate chances against a tough opponent. The difference in Game One came down to a couple of bounces - and a Raiders goalie who was simply outstanding.
If this opener was any indication, the rest of the playoffs is going to be a battle.
Next Up: Away game against the Clarington Toros on Wednesday.
