IMPORTANT: When beginning the course it is important to open “Child Management” and enter all children you have registered in minor hockey. All children must be listed here in order to associate your certification with your child’s Hockey Canada record. To aide with connecting your certification to  your child’s record, children’s names should be entered using the same spelling as when they were registered with Hockey Canada.

INTRODUCTION

Parents play a crucial role in the development of your athletes. Respect in Sport is an effective and informative online training program for parents of active children. This one hour online certification program reinforces the role of a parent in activities of young athletes. This unique certification program complements Respect in Sport for Coaches/Activity Leaders by reinforcing a parents role in a child or youth’s activities, encouraging positive sport behaviors, and providing insight into the various roles other individuals (such as coaches and officials) play.

This program is about empowering parents to ensure the safety of their children, encourage positive and effective communication, and to enhance a child’s fun and camaraderie of the activity.

The number one reason cited for coaches, managers and officials of all ages leaving a sport is unacceptable parent behavior. It is our hope that the Respect in Sport Parent Program will help assert proper parent behaviors in order to create a more rewarding, safe and respectful environment for everyone involved.

The Respect in Sport Program for Parents is a unique, in-depth 1 hour online program geared to providing the parent with information on how to evaluate and understand:

  • Parental influence over a child
  • Coach and leader roles in sport
  • Role of the parent and coach in ensuring a child’s enjoyment of a sport
  • Protecting your child when outside of your immediate control
  • Concussion awareness and Return to Play guidelines
  • Long-Term Player Development

This course currently does not have an expiry date and only needs to be taken once.

Rationale:

  • OMHA will show leadership ensuring all stakeholders; Team Officials, Game Officials and parents have received education, and a consistent message.
  • Reward for progressive organizational growth and improvement of the experience for our membership versus risk of very limited negative repercussions.
  • Ability for timely information to be added annually including high priority topics including Concussion Awareness, Return to Play Guidelines, New Head Contact Rule, Long-Term Player Development (LTPD).
  • It is a child protection tool that reduces liability and delivers on the OMHA’s responsibility for ‘duty of care’.
  • Emphasis that it is a positive program to make good parents better. Not a reaction to media reports or a tool for discipline.
  • An opportunity to empower all of the good parents in the organization.
  • A program provided by Hockey for the greater good of all parents in the wider community.
  • A significant recruitment and retention tool.
  • A strong step toward the long-term goal of social and culture change.
